Of the political positions I’ve taken, not one of them has seemed more odd or frustrating to liberals and conservatives than my abstention from the ballot.
Liberals are horrified that I would jeopardize an election. Conservatives, who you would think would be happy I abstain, grow irate that I throw away an American privilege.
There were several letters in the Inquirer's letters column that advocated that, rather than take part in protests like Occupy Philadelphia, people should vote instead and thereby toss out the bad politicians and put better politicians in. Great idea, in theory anyway. Let's review the last dozen or so years and voting.
